Feeding Plants

ḈḁṇṇḁḇḭṦḼ plants do not require Plant Food to grow. Without food, ḈḁṇṇḁḇḭṦḼ plants grow one percent (1%) every 90 minute cycle.  If fed, however, plants grow at their genetically-determined growth rate (where very slow is 1% per cycle and very fast is 5% per cycle).  And yes, that means there is no point in feeding a very slow growing plant! Conversely, if you feed a very fast indoor/outdoor variety under lights you can see some dangerously fast growth!

Feeding plants is the best way to regulate their growth to coordinate breeding plans. It's also a lot of fun to watch a grow mature at the various genetic rates. Or you can just let each generation take a bit less than a week to mature and enjoy a slow, leisurely approach to growing. The bottom line is that feeding  plants is your choice.

PLANT FOOD SPIKES

The standard feeding method for ḈḁṇṇḁḇḭṦḼ since the beginning has been Plant Food Spikes.  Each spike lasts 48 hours and takes care of all plants within 1.5 meters.

Plant Food Spikes are color coded, and cycle through green, yellow, and red as they are used up. Green spikes have more than 50% life remaining, and yellow spikes have less than 50% life remaining.  Red spikes are expired and should be deleted. Clicking on a Plant Food Spike displays the hours remaining in local chat.

To feed a plant, rez out a Plant Food Spike within range, then click the plant and select "Feed" from the main menu. Remember, when each plant cycles (very 90 minutes) it checks to make sure a Plant Food Spike is within 1.5 meters of the plant, so be careful if you move food spikes around your grow. Also be careful not to overfeed your plants.  A plant that has been overfed will not grow during the next cycle.

IMPORTANT! Plant Food Spikes are one-use items. Do not take them back into inventory after they have been rezzed.  Plants do not recognize Plant Food Spikes that have been re-rezzed. This is not a bug.

Version 1 plants recognize only this type of food.  Higher versions use Plant Food Spikes by default.

LIQUID PLANT FOOD

ḈḁṇṇḁḇḭṦḼ Liquid Plant Food provides growers and breeders with even more control over feeding their plants. Liquid Plant Food feeding stations are refillable, refills last for 96 hours in the "Classic" dispenser and 100 hours in the "Deluxe" dispenser, and the feeding range for plants is 3 meters. In other words, Liquid Plant Food lasts longer and covers four times the area!

Like Plant Food Spikes, Liquid Plant Food is color coded.  Additionally, the liquid level of the "contents" of the dispenser drops as the plant food is used.  When a dispenser has more than 50% time remaining, the contents will be green.  When it drops to less than 50%, the contents turn yellow, and at 12 hours, the contents turn orange. When the Liquid Plant Food is completely used, the contents will return to the "full" size but turn red to provide a strong visual cue that the dispenser needs a refill.

Use these steps to deploy a ḈḁṇṇḁḇḭṦḼ Liquid Plant Food dispenser:
  1. Rez the dispenser where you want it. Because you don't have to remove it when it's empty, take some time to plan your grow space. If the dispenser contents are red, you will need to refill it before continuing. See below for information about refilling dispensers.

  2. Click the dispenser to display the Menu and select "Activate." You will see a message in local chat confirming that the Liquid Plant Food dispenser is ready.

  3. Configure each plant to use Liquid Plant Food. Ensure that plants are within 3 meters of a Liquid Plant Food dispenser. Select "Liq Food" from the plant's Advanced Menu. (If "Std Food" is displayed, the plant is already configured for Liquid Plant Food.

  4. Click "Feed" on the plant's Main Menu. The plant is now fed for 8 cycles (12 hours). Remember, if the Liquid Plant Food runs out while plants are still "fed" from it, the plants will be "unfed" at their next growth interval.
You can pause Liquid Plant Food at any time using the Pause button on the Plant Food Menu. To see the status (active, paused, or empty), just click the dispenser to display the Menu. Remember to use the Cancel button to close ḈḁṇṇḁḇḭṦḼ  menus!

REFILLING LIQUID PLANT FOOD DISPENSERS

Empty Liquid Plant Food dispensers will have red contents.

To refill an empty dispenser, select Refill from the menu. You then have one minute to drop a ḈḁṇṇḁḇḭṦḼ Liquid Plant Food Refill into the dispenser. To do this, hold CTRL and drag a refill from your SL inventory onto the dispenser. When it's over the right spot to drop, the dispenser will be outlined in red. (If you miss, take the Refill back into inventory and try again. There's a little skill involved in drag-and-drop process, but practice makes perfect!) The Liquid Plant Food will turn green, a message will appear in local chat, and you're good for another four days!

You cannot "bulk load" multiple refills into an older "Classic" Liquid Plant Food dispenser. While it's unlikely you will be able to do it, you risk losing all but the first refill you place in the dispenser. So don't try.  If bulk loading a month's worth of Refills (or more) into a Liquid Plant Food system floats your boat, get the "Deluxe" model!

  2. There are two tricks. First, be sure you've clicked on the dispenser and selected "Refill" from the menu. (If you see "Activate" or "Pause," then your dispenser still has a charge.) Unless you have put the dispenser into Refill mode, you can't drop a Refill.

Next, select the Liquid Plant Food Refill in your inventory. Hold down the CTRL button on your keyboard while dragging the Refill over to the dispenser. When your mouse is correctly over the dispenser, you will see a red outline around the dispenser. At that point, release your mouse button to drop the Refill into the dispenser. This works the same as notecard drop boxes that are fairly common in SL. And it does require a bit of practice.
